We received support from Terraformation to set up a solar roof with a small off-grid battery solution to power devices in our seed bank to dehumidify, dry or treat seeds. As Malawi’s electrical infrastructure is notoriously overloaded this also changes life in the office as surplus energy can be used to drive small devices like laptops, charge phones and keep things running.

Manase was very helpful when installing the solar roof and we are super excited for every day the sun sends us free electricity!

Only about 3 weeks after the installation we had a major electrical shortage at the main input of factory electricity and had to rely fully on solar energy for about 2 months and were able to power all devices. These problems have been fixed by a great and very capable electrician with the great name Edison. We have much more ambitious plans in regards to solar power and cooking in the future… stay tuned for updates on this
