Wells for Zoë Easter Camp – LfL – Learning for Life
135 Students attended this action packed, fun filled week at WfZ’s Easter Camp. Each morning the girls did revision classes in academic subjects. Our trained counsellor, Beata Moyo, a very experienced secondary teacher also, was on hand to assist any girls with worries or difficulties. After a good hearty meal of nsima, relish and usipa prepared by Mary, our cook, with help from our intern girls, it was time for fun-filled learning in a large variety of activities.
The girls were divided up into 10 different groups. Monday started with the form 4 girls going to our organic farm in Lusangazi, where they learnt about tree planting, grafting mango trees, how to make thermo compost manure, sowing maize and soya beans amongst other skills that Brenda and the farm team taught them. Over the week all the girls got their chance to learn at the farm. Meanwhile the girls from form 1,2 and 3 were back at the factory, where Mercy from the tailoring team introduced the girls to how our pedal singer sewing machines work. Another group cut out the alphabet to give to Miriam for our preschoolers, while others enjoyed games of skipping, tag and chasing.
Our nurse (amongst other things!) Alepher gave classes in female health, menstrual hygiene, caring for your body and getting the chance to ask questions that might be worrying them. The week was rounded off with singing, dancing, doing little plays, saying a poem, distribution of underwear with everyone going home after a week filled with exuberance, joy and laughter and a gift of a tree to plant. All of the above coordinated by Florence Harawa, head of our Girl Child Student Project.
