a story written about John & Mary Coyne of Wells for Zoë as written by Christina Lynam

Category:

from author Christina Lynam:

“I returned to UCD in 2000 and studied Humanitarian Assistance. Then I set up the charity Cara Malawi and worked in Malawi for 15 years. I was so struck by what Mary and John achieved, that I felt it important to tell their amazing story.”

FOREWORD

This is the story of how an ordinary man has done extraordinary things. A man who transformed his own life in order to save thousands of lives. An Irishman who refused to step aside while the grim reaper swooped for Malawians. But most of all this is the story of water. The most important thing for any human life is as precious as ingots of gold in the most destitute parts of the world. John builds wells and saves lives. He divines clean water in the most remote villages in Africa by using his engineering skills and the sweat of his brow. After water he planted trees, educated the indigent and protected the vulnerable. In short he helped the ordinary man and woman to help themselves.

It’s a personal story of a private man that led to mass salvation in one nation. It’s the story of John Coyne and his incomparable wife Mary – without whom none of what he achieved would have been possible.
