What is the Problem? Why is this Important?

The women we serve in Northern Malawi, are born into poverty, they have no rights but a myriad of responsibilities, even as girls. They carry water on their heads when they are as young as four or five, they collect firewood, they are responsible for the growing and cooking of food, and really don’t have a life. Males are fed first, preferentially educated and have any of the rights that exist. But there’s worse, like traditional cultural practices, trafficking, mutilation, early marriage and childbirth complications.

Educated girls have fewer children, are better able to care for their children, demand better access to health care and information, practice safer sex, have better access to jobs, and are more likely to send their children to school.

Their process is as follows:

Wells for Zoë visit a village in need of a pump and discuss terms
The villagers dig the well and make the cover with cement and a ‘spider’ provided by w4z
When that is done w4z come back and fit the Zoë pump which is made in the w4z factory in Mzuzu by their Malawian employees
Pictures are taken of the process and GPS coords recorded; all will be uploaded to this page so you can follow the progress

My goal is to raise enough for one pump and its installation. This costs €250.

We are [NAME] and instead of giving us a wedding present (that we would of course graciously accept, but don’t really need!) we would love you, our wedding guests, to donate to Wells for Zoë on our behalf?

There are volunteers in Áras Kate working with the local teachers in the classroom and the local cook in the kitchen. Volunteers built the building and dug the well but volunteers are only part of the story. Wells for Zoë is here not to do things for the community, but to work with the community. They’re here to work in partnership, recognising that only through partnership will the work sustain itself. Only through partnership will the work make any difference.

WfZ is a small Irish charity that has a major impact in Malawi in Africa, providing clean and safe water. In the past year they have installed 1,000 pumps that will provide clean water to over a quarter of a million people for life! WfZ has a proven track record in delivering impressive results despite the fact that they are a small charity that receives no government funding and relies completely on small private donations. This $5,000 grant will provide up to 10,000 people with clean water for life or send 50 girls to secondary school – this makes a phenomenal difference in their lives, the lives of their children and in their communities.
