Great site, great project. Looking forward to seeing how the volunteering develops ... remember "why don't you go out there and do something useful?" from Sinead's "Drink before the war"? (With the obvious difference that we're not talking about the man in the liquor store!). "Baby, can i buy you a drink?" brings it full circle in terms of songs about different drinks and doing something useful. Yea!

Honestlry I did not lik ethe commenet on the phrog for Sunday 10th May 2009. As a Malawian I feel offended cause we all have different ways of showing love and affection. It wrong to assume that we do it the same way you do in Irealand. I wish you took time to understanbd how Malawians show affection before you even decide to ewrite what u did. Its degrading and demeaning.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comments on our photo log.
I am sorry if my observations would offend anyone.
My blogs are intended to show what I find in terms of pictures and comment.
You should notice that they show almost a totally positive picture
On my last four week visit, I dealt with corruption, bureaucracy, cruelty, cheating, cold heartedness, theft, lying......, all by people in positions of some authority and where most of the impact was on the poor. But what keeps me going back are some amazing women, farseeing Chiefs, and a knowledge that we can make some little difference to the lives of the poorest.
I simply made some observations on my recent visit, my 14th, as I might on Ireland, where family relationships can also be less than perfect. I honestly can only see what I see. I am working with people every day in a big spread of areas, trying to Inspire Educate and Challenge in the most respectful of ways. I am learning about Malawi from them as well as from a group of friends, some of whom have been in Malawi for up to 30 years
I honestly would like to discuss your reaction and would be delighted to be enlightened about Malawi.
In my blogs to date, I have tried to give a view of Malawi as I have observed it, a view which has been totally positive (464 out of 465 logs):
I wrote
We are told of extended families and how everyone cares for everyone, but it's more like nobody cares for anyone. I have yet to see mothers kissing babies or couples cuddling or showing affection.

If I were to write this again I would say that no one in any kind of authority, that I have met, cares about the poor. I could have said that corruption and dishonesty are widespread, or that alcoholism is a problem (as it is in Ireland).
I have often about amazing families caring for large numbers of orphans, with little or no resources,as extended families and we have small programmes to help.
We have an advert running on Irish Television at the moment, to raise aid money, showing an African mother kissing a baby and I simply commented that I had never seen this happening, which is a fact, never in 5 years.
Nor have I seen indications of affection, even between couples we know well and work with.
I have no problems or issues with Malawian culture, or how affection is shown, but I do have many issues with Irish culture and Western values.
Remote rural people in Malawi are the warmest you could meet, and to whom the tag The warm heart of Africa applies but there are large numbers of the other type and if you want to help the one you have to contend with the others.
